San Benedetto del Tronto is a town roughly nine kilometres long along the coast, from Porto d'Ascoli in the south up to the border with Grottammare in the north, but narrow — only a few blocks between the lungomare and the hill behind it. Its shape and size make much of the town walkable or cyclable, without ever taking the car. For anyone coming to La Tana who has parked the car (see the parking guide), here's what really works for getting around town — and what's worth knowing first.
On foot · almost everything within reach
From the house, at Via Risorgimento 43, the distances to the key points are all walkable for anyone without mobility difficulties (for the internal level changes within the house, see the 'Coming into the house' section in /casa/le-stanze):
- Pedestrian centre · 100 metres (1 minute) — bars, newsagent, restaurants, shops
- Railway station · 650 metres (9 minutes) — regional trains and Frecce on the Adriatic mainline
- Lungomare and beach · 900 metres (10–12 minutes) — cycle-and-pedestrian path, palms, open sea
- Molo Sud (port and blue lighthouse) · about 1.2 km (15 minutes) — the evening walk par excellence
- Circolo Tennis Maggioni · 700 metres (9 minutes)
- Pattinodromo Panfili · 930 metres (12 minutes)
- Pineta dei Funai + dog beach · 2 km (25 minutes) heading north, on the border with Grottammare
- Sentina Reserve · 5–6 km (45 minutes on foot · better by bike, see below)
- Grottammare centre · 2 km north along the palm-lined lungomare
The lovely setting of the palm-lined lungomare — eight continuous kilometres of shaded cycle-and-pedestrian path, between the sea and the palms — makes walking one of the town's pleasures. From mid-April to the end of October the path is full of people; in winter it's almost yours alone.
By bike · the lungomare cycle-and-pedestrian path
The lungomare cycle-and-pedestrian path links Grottammare in the north and Porto d'Ascoli in the south with no interruptions, eight kilometres in all, completely flat, separated from the car traffic by a continuous belt of palms. It's the most pleasant way to see the town. From our house you reach the path in five minutes on foot, wheeling the bike (out of Via Risorgimento → pedestrian centre → lungomare).

The e-scooter sharing service in San Benedetto is in a trial / re-launch phase. The Comune has published a notice for the activation of MPPE sharing services (predominantly electric-powered scooters) — the service may restart in the 2026 season with a new operator. It's worth checking on the Comune's website, or with us on arrival, which operator is running during your stay.

Open the documentBy bus · the Start spa urban lines
San Benedetto's urban lines are run by Start spa, the Piceno's local public transport company. They cover the town's districts, the link to Porto d'Ascoli and Grottammare, and the inland hamlets. The lines that pass near the centre (lines 1, 2, 4 and the A) are the useful ones for most guests — up-to-date timetables and stops are on the official Start site or on the Moovit app (recommended, and more practical).
One seasonal detail: in summer (June–mid-September) there's a free shuttle bus service run by the Comune and Start. You leave the car at the car park by the 'Riviera delle Palme' stadium (south of the town) and a shuttle runs every 20 minutes towards the lungomare. Handy for anyone coming by car who doesn't want to circle around looking for a space.

The San Benedetto station is on the Adriatic mainline, served by both regional trains and Frecciabianca, Frecciarossa and Italo. From the station you're home in nine minutes on foot. Useful things to know:
- Ascoli Piceno · regional 50 minutes, ticket under 5 euros · ideal for a day out (Piazza del Popolo, travertine, Caffè Meletti)
- Pescara · regional 1h, frequent train · city centre on foot from the station
- Ancona · regional 1h–1h15 · Frecciabianca 50 minutes, higher fares
- Bologna · Frecciabianca 2h30 · Frecciarossa 2h45 · no changes
- Rome · direct Frecciabianca 3h–3h30 · or regional + change at Ancona
- Loreto + Recanati · regional with a change at Civitanova, about 1h30
Regional tickets are bought at the station or on the Trenitalia app. For the Frecce it's worth booking in advance online (prices rise close to the date).

OpenBy car · blue zone and car parks
For trips out of town the car is still handy, but in the centre it's more a burden than a help. San Benedetto's historic centre is a paid blue zone from June to September (every day 09:00–24:00, €1.50/h). There are free car parks within walking distance of the house — the parking guide has the map with coordinates.

OpenTaxis · an honest note
San Benedetto del Tronto doesn't have a widespread taxi service like the big cities. There's a small taxi rank in front of the railway station, but flagging down a taxi on the spur of the moment from outside the house takes time. It's best to book one in advance if you need it (for arrival or departure with heavy luggage, for instance). Uber/Free Now-type services don't operate in the area.
What to remember, in short
- The whole town centre + the sea + the two sports facilities are reachable on foot from the house, from 9 to 15 minutes.
- The lungomare cycle-and-pedestrian path is the real pleasure — eight flat, shaded kilometres between Grottammare and Porto d'Ascoli.
- For longer outings (Sentina, upper Grottammare, Cupra Marittima) a hire bike is the best choice.
- For the nearby towns (Ascoli, Pescara, Ancona, Loreto) — regional train.
- A car is only really useful for Offida (Carnival), the Piceno villages, the Sibillini, Frasassi.
