Families travelling with a young athlete to a competition — a three-day tennis tournament, a skating-meet weekend, a week of federal training — have specific needs that a hotel rarely covers well. The washing machine for the competition kit, a kitchenette to keep an eye on the diet (no restaurant three times a day), separate rooms because the athlete is resting and a little brother isn't, closeness to the venue so as not to lose time in traffic. La Tana dei Dalmatini is 9 minutes on foot from the Circolo Tennis Maggioni and 12 from the Pattinodromo Panfili — the two historic sports facilities of San Benedetto del Tronto, where the most important tournaments on the central Adriatic coast are held.
The Circolo Tennis «Giorgio Maggioni»
Founded in 1959, the Circolo Tennis Maggioni is at Viale Bruno Buozzi 1, inside the Pineta Buozzi, a hundred metres or so from the lungomare. Ten courts in all: eight clay and two synthetic grass, six of them covered. The centre court holds around 800 people. A history to be proud of — a Davis Cup quarter-final was played here in 1972 (Italy–Netherlands 4–1). For fourteen years running (2001–2023) it hosted the San Benedetto Tennis Cup, an ATP Challenger whose winners have included Stan Wawrinka (2003), Matteo Berrettini (2017) and Benoît Paire (2023).
The state of the Challenger and the redevelopment
The San Benedetto Tennis Cup Challenger has been on hold since 2024. The club president, interviewed by La Nuova Riviera (May 2026), explained that its return depends on a redevelopment of the facility needed to meet current ATP requirements: a new stand, food, players' and hospitality areas, and a press point. The road map calls first for settling the direct assignment of the site to the club (in talks with the town council), then the restyling works — only at that point can the tournament's return to the ATP calendar be requested. In the meantime, the federal calendar carries on: June 2026, for example, will see the International Tournament organised by the Rotary Club of San Benedetto (5–9 June) — a tournament followed by the region's junior tennis families.

The Pattinodromo Panfili is at Viale delle Tamerici 5, in the Albula Centro district, on the lungomare a few hundred metres from the Maggioni. A 4,000-square-metre facility, with a 2,330 m² skating surface (open-air), stands for 300, and a track approved for the European championships. Four disciplines are practised: artistic skating, speed (racing), rink hockey, inline freestyle. In 2010 it hosted the European Championships. The resident sports club is ASD Diavoli Verde Rosa, which in 2026 has already organised the AICS Marche-Abruzzo Interregional Championship (3 May), will take three athletes to the Trofeo delle Regioni, and will run the FISR 2026 Federal Interprovincial Championships (date to be checked on the federal calendar). The track is open to the public from Easter to the end of October.

- Circolo Tennis Maggioni · Viale Bruno Buozzi 1 — about 700 metres on foot, 9 minutes at a normal pace. Three minutes by car.
- Pattinodromo Panfili · Viale delle Tamerici 5 — about 930 metres on foot, 12 minutes. Four minutes by car.
- Both on foot, flat, through the pedestrian centre towards the lungomare. No car, no parking space to hunt for when the competition ends.
Why a whole house works better than a hotel
- Washing machine and dryer, Siemens — the competition kit gets washed in the evening and is back on clean the next day. In a hotel, no.
- A well-equipped kitchenette — fridge, induction hobs, microwave, dishwasher. Anyone managing a young athlete's diet (pre-competition carbs, post-competition recovery) knows how frustrating it is to depend on restaurants three times a day for four days. It isn't a restaurant kitchen, it's a kitchenette — but for pasta, rice, chicken and eggs, it does it all.
- Two separate bedrooms + living room — the athlete resting after the competition doesn't share the room with younger siblings who are still awake. The house sleeps up to 6 (see /casa/le-stanze).
- Flexible check-in — competition times never line up with a standard check-in. We welcome you in person between 15:00 and 20:00, and for later arrivals we arrange a self-check-in (see /casa/check-in).
- Fibre Wi-Fi — junior athletes miss days of school; the connection holds up video lessons with no trouble.
- A fenced 110 m² garden — to stretch your legs on the day between competitions without taking the car.

OpenOutdoor sport, free · the seafront gym
You don't need a competition to do sport in San Benedetto. At the start of the beach, on the lungomare, there's an outdoor gym kitted out with equipment — the local «Muscle Beach» — where there's almost always someone working out, from early morning until sunset. It's open, free, and a few minutes on foot from the house.

OpenWhen to book
The dates of the tournaments at the Maggioni and the Panfili aren't uniform across the year. Our advice: as soon as your athlete's call-up is confirmed, write to us with the dates — competition weekends fill up fast. For those who don't yet know whether the call-up will come, it's still worth asking: we often keep a little margin of flexibility for sporting families, who become our most loyal guests for obvious reasons — the same athletes come back competition after competition.
An honest note: so far we've had a single booking from an athlete's family in the whole history of the house — despite being nine minutes from the Maggioni. Not because the house isn't suited to it, but because the sports clubs have no referral channel for accommodation, and the families who come for a competition search for «hotel near [venue name]» on Booking, not «holiday home». This article is for exactly that: to be found by those who are looking.
