Eleven destinations for a day out — from the short trip to a village 15 km away, to a day trip to UNESCO Urbino two hours off. Le Marche is a small region but an extraordinarily dense one: art towns, different seas, mountains, caves, wineries, opera festivals. • Acquaviva Picena

    ROCCA MEDIEVALE · BORGO

    Acquaviva Picena

A medieval village 15 km inland, on a hill commanding the Tronto valley. The reason to visit is the 14th–15th-century medieval fortress, which can be visited in full: a crossbow-shaped plan, three corner towers, a tall cylindrical keep 22 metres high giving a 360° view from the sea to the Sibillini, and on clear days as far as the Gran Sasso and the Maiella.

    • 360° panoramic view

WHEN TO GO · June–September · in the evening, when the lights come on over the fortress

  • Offida

    BORGO · VINO · MERLETTO

    Offida

One of the "Most Beautiful Villages in Italy", on a rocky spur dividing the Tesino and Tronto valleys. Offida is famous for two things: bobbin lace — an art handed down from mother to daughter for five centuries, still alive in the streets of the centre — and the wines of the Piceno (Rosso Piceno Superiore, Falerio dei Colli Ascolani). Piazza del Popolo has an unusual triangular shape; Santa Maria della Rocca is a 14th-century church in a panoramic setting.

    • Triangular Piazza del Popolo
    • Santa Maria della Rocca
    • Rosso Piceno wineries

WHEN TO GO · April–October · January–February for the Historic Carnival

house note · Combine it with a local winery for a tasting (Pantaleone, Velenosi, Saladini Pilastri). For anyone here in winter: the Historic Carnival of Offida is one of the most recognisable events in Le Marche.

  • Ascoli Piceno

    CITTÀ D'ARTE

    Ascoli Piceno

One of the most beautiful Italian towns that few tourists discover. The historic centre — entirely pedestrian and built in white travertine, the stone quarried in the surrounding hills — is a walk in itself. Piazza del Popolo is considered one of the most beautiful in Italy: spacious, enclosed by Renaissance arches and palaces, with the Caffè Meletti (since 1907) where you can try the local Anisetta. There are the medieval "hundred towers", Roman bridges over the river Tronto, dozens of churches, and a strong food-and-wine heart (the fried oliva ascolana, the Ascoli mixed fry).

    • Piazza del Popolo · white travertine
    • Caffè Meletti · the Anisetta

WHEN TO GO · All year · spectacular in June–July with the Quintana (the historic joust)

house note · Go in the afternoon, when the sun lights up the travertine. An aperitivo at the Caffè Meletti, dinner in a hostaria in the centre. By regional train, 45 minutes from San Benedetto station — handy if you'd rather not drive.

  • Fermo

    CITTÀ D'ARTE · ROMANO

    Fermo

A Renaissance town less touristy than Ascoli but just as interesting. Piazza del Popolo is large and elegant; the cathedral of the Assunta dominates from the top of the Sàbulo hill, with a view ranging from the Sibillini to the sea. Fermo's great surprise is the Roman Cisterns — an underground system of Roman cisterns from the 1st century BC, around 2,000 m³ in volume, perfectly preserved. They're visited with a guide; it's an incredible experience.

Castelluccio di Norcia · the Sibillini

The Castelluccio plateau in the Monti Sibillini, at 1,500 metres' altitude. From late June to mid-July the lentil bloom colours the meadows in stripes of red, yellow, purple and white — one of the most recognisable natural spectacles in Italy. The historic village was destroyed by the 2016 earthquake and is now a small community renewing itself, with places to eat and local producers. The landscape remains intact and is part of the Monti Sibillini National Park.

    SANTUARIO · LETTERATURA

    Loreto and Recanati

Two neighbouring towns worth a day together. Loreto is home to the Basilica della Santa Casa — one of the most important Marian sanctuaries in the world, a place of pilgrimage for eight centuries. Inside, the Holy House of Nazareth (carried here by angels, according to tradition) enclosed in a Renaissance marble masterpiece. Recanati, a few kilometres on, is the town of Giacomo Leopardi: you can visit the house where he was born, and walk up to the Colle dell'Infinito that inspired the most famous Italian poem.

  • Macerata

    CITTÀ D'ARTE · OPERA

    Macerata

A university town at the centre of Le Marche, with a well-preserved Renaissance old town. The real reason Macerata is famous is the Sferisterio — a neoclassical arena of 1820, 88 metres long, with exceptional acoustics. Every summer (July–August) it hosts the Macerata Opera Festival, one of the most important open-air opera festivals in Europe: watching a Tosca or a Don Giovanni under the stars, in a shell of stone, is an experience you remember for years.

  • Riviera del Conero · Sirolo, Numana

    MARE DIVERSO · SCOGLIERE

Riviera del Conero · Sirolo, Numana

Monte Conero (572 m) drops sheer to the sea and creates a coast completely different from San Benedetto's: white cliffs, pebbles, clear water in every shade of blue. The Spiaggia delle Due Sorelle — reachable only by sea on the little boats from Numana — is one of the most beautiful beaches in Italy. Sirolo is a medieval village perched on the cliffs, with a splendid Teatro alle Cave. For anyone wanting to grasp how varied the Adriatic coast can be, it's a day trip that changes your perspective.

  • Frasassi Caves

    NATURA · GROTTE

    Frasassi Caves

One of the most impressive cave networks in Europe, discovered in 1971. The guided tourist route lasts 75 minutes, but the whole system stretches for 30 km. The Abisso Ancona — the first chamber — could hold Milan Cathedral. Stalactites, stalagmites, underground lakes: the inside temperature is a constant 14°C, which makes it a perfect destination for the hottest August days (35° outside, 14° inside). The village of Genga, outside, is also worth a look.

  • Cingoli · the Balcony of Le Marche

Cingoli · the Balcony of Le Marche

Nicknamed "the Balcony of Le Marche" for good reason: at 631 metres' altitude, from the town's terrace you can see the whole region as far as the Adriatic on a clear day. The medieval village is well preserved, with the Collegiata di Sant'Esuperanzio and the cathedral among its gems. Just outside the centre is Lake Castreccioni (also called Lake Cingoli) — a man-made lake ringed by hills, perfect for a walk or a picnic.

  • Urbino

    UNESCO · RINASCIMENTO

    Urbino

A UNESCO World Heritage Site and the cradle of the Italian Renaissance. The Palazzo Ducale, built by Federico da Montefeltro in the 1400s, is one of the most important Renaissance palaces in the world — a manifesto in stone of balance, perspective and beauty. It houses the Galleria Nazionale delle Marche, with works by Raphael (born here), Piero della Francesca (the Flagellation of Christ, one of the most studied paintings in the world), and Titian. You can also visit the House where Raphael was born. A serious distance — 2h15 by car — but it's the most important destination in Le Marche.

    • Palazzo Ducale · Renaissance masterpiece
    • Galleria Nazionale delle Marche · Raphael, Piero della Francesca
    • Raphael's house
    • UNESCO historic centre

WHEN TO GO · April–October · avoid rainy days (the centre is all uphill)
