Christmas in San Benedetto del Tronto isn't the magazine Christmas of Bolzano or Trento. It's the Christmas of an Adriatic seaside town — with a serious council programme, two weeks of markets in the pedestrian centre, the lights along the palm-lined seafront switched on from 6 December, and a deeply felt tradition of nativity scenes in all the churches of the centre. Below, six weeks of celebration told for anyone wanting to stay in SBT in December or January.
The calendar · SBT Christmas Holidays
Each year the Comune of San Benedetto publishes the 'SBT Christmas Holidays' programme — a bill of events running from 6 December to 11 January: concerts, entertainment, markets, lights, events in the neighbourhoods. The 2026/27 programme is usually announced in early November by the tourist office. It's worth checking the Comune's website towards the end of October if you're planning your stay.

Open the documentThe Christmas markets · in the pedestrian centre
The SBT Christmas markets are held in the pedestrian centre — around Viale Secondo Moretti, Piazza Matteotti and the streets of the historic centre — usually on the weekends of December, from the first to the second-to-last of the month. Local crafts, food and wine of the Piceno (extra-virgin olive oil, Rosso Piceno wine, cured meats, cheeses), homeware, Christmas decorations. In recent years the Comune has promoted an SBT Christmas Village with fixed stands and themed areas for children.
Natale al Borgo · Paese Alto
One of the most characterful events is Natale al Borgo — held in Piazza Bice Piacentini, in the heart of the medieval Paese Alto. Live tableaux, a living nativity with people from the neighbourhood in traditional dress, music, local produce. It's put on for the community of the Paese Alto, not for tourists — and that's exactly why it's worth twice as much: you'll arrive at an event where the people of San Benedetto are the leads, not the extras. It usually takes place on the weekends before and after Christmas, lasting 2–3 hours an evening. The programme is published on the dedicated 'Natale al Borgo' Facebook page. Five minutes' walk uphill from the centre.
The enchanted forest of lights
A very popular attraction with families is the enchanted forest of 50,000 lights — a town park turned into a magical trail with fairy-tale characters, lit-up decorations and Father Christmas. Free, outdoors, suitable for all ages. The exact location and the opening days change from year to year: it's usually one of the central parks (Parco Annunziata or Parco Stella) and is open in the evening from 17:30 to 22:00 on the December weekends. Check the Comune's website for the week you're interested in.
The nativity scenes in the churches · a living tradition
San Benedetto has a strong tradition of artistic nativity scenes set up in the churches of the centre throughout the Christmas period. The most famous is the nativity of the Ponterotto church (the Madonna del Suffragio parish), made for 40 years in partnership with Roberto Angelini — it's considered one of the finest in the province. Other notable nativity scenes are in the churches of the Paese Alto and in Santa Maria della Marina (the cathedral, near the harbour). Visiting the nativity scenes is a widespread custom between 26 December and 6 January.
Christmas Eve dinner · what they cook here
Christmas Eve in SBT is traditionally 'di magro' — no meat, all fish. The classic San Benedetto dinner opens with seafood antipasti (salted anchovies, salmon, clams), moves on to fish first courses (spaghetti with clams, seafood risotto, lobster fettuccine) and roast or baked fish mains. It closes with frustingo (a Piceno cake of dried figs, almonds, walnuts and honey — ancient, kept for Christmas).
- Ristorante Acqua Pazza at Via del Consolato 28 — a traditional Christmas Eve menu, San Benedetto brodetto often available.
- Ristorante Bianco Sale at Viale Buozzi 12 — Christmas Eve with a modern slant, top-quality raw seafood.
- Trattoria Molo Sud — fish of the day, a family atmosphere.
- Puerto Baloo in the Albula area — a large place, a wide menu, easier bookings even if you're trying at the last minute.
Important: Christmas Eve dinner needs to be booked within the first week of December at all the traditional restaurants — it's the most in-demand evening of the year, along with New Year's Eve.
Christmas Day and Boxing Day
On 25 December the town is quiet: in the morning many go to Mass, lunch is a family affair (for those staying over, the options for lunch out are limited — most places are closed or serve only a menu booked in advance). 26 December · Santo Stefano is the classic day for the round of the nativity scenes, a walk along the still-decorated seafront, and dinner out. Many of the trattorias in the centre are back open on the evening of the 26th.
La Befana · 6 January · the last day of the celebrations
6 January · Epiphany closes the festivities with events for children all across the centre: the Befana arrives in the square (typically Piazza Matteotti or Piazza Giorgini) with stockings and sweets, and entertainment run by the Pro Loco volunteers. It's the last day the enchanted forest of lights is open. After 6 January the lights are switched off gradually over the following weeks.
Where to go on the days in between
Between early December and Epiphany there's plenty of free time for other things. The most sensible ideas to fill out the Christmas week:
- Christmas antiques market in Ascoli Piceno · Piazza del Popolo · 5–8 December 2026. 35 minutes by car. One of the most beautiful squares in Italy, lit up for the festivities.
- The villages of the Piceno in their winter dress · Offida, Acquaviva Picena, Ripatransone, Montefiore dell'Aso — in December the villages are all but empty, ideal for anyone after an authentic medieval atmosphere.
- Sentina Reserve · winter birdwatching with the coots and the marsh harrier. 6 km by bike from the house, free entry.
- Frasassi Caves (95 minutes by car) — a constant 14°C inside, useful on rainy days.

OpenStaying in SBT at Christmas
December and the first days of January are the months in SBT with the best value for money of the whole year — the lowest prices, the town in full programme of events, no tourist crowds. The house's availability can be checked in real time on the booking calendar (site + Booking) — look at the dates you're interested in.
Why it's worth coming
Christmas in SBT is the Christmas of a real town, made by the people of San Benedetto for themselves — the living nativity of the Paese Alto, the round of the nativity scenes on 26 December, the frustingo on Christmas Eve. For anyone after a Christmas that isn't a touristy fiction — not the replica markets of Trento or Bolzano, but a Mediterranean Christmas with the sea ten minutes away and the villages of the Piceno at your back — it's one of the most underrated choices on the central Adriatic.
