San Benedetto del Tronto sits in a strategic spot between Le Marche and Abruzzo, between the Adriatic and the Monti Sibillini. And it's a far livelier town than you might imagine: every year it hosts the finish of one of Europe's most important cycle races, music festivals of national standing, exhibitions, food fairs, sporting events. Below, what's on season by season — useful both for those planning a holiday and for those already here looking for something to do.

Spring · March–May

Spring is the cycling season. Every year the Tirreno–Adriatico — one of the most important stage races on the UCI WorldTour calendar — finishes in San Benedetto del Tronto. The "Trofeo del Tridente di Nettuno" is presented on the town seafront. It's an event that brings international teams, world TV crews and tens of thousands of fans to the town. Roads closed, the seafront overrun, and for two or three days the town lives to the rhythm of a Grand Tour. Related exhibitions ("The bikes of the champions" at the Palazzina Azzurra, vintage bicycles displayed in the shops of the centre).

  • Tirreno–Adriatico: final stage every March (varies year to year between mid and late month)
  • Spring exhibitions at the Palazzina Azzurra (usually from mid-March)
  • Opening of the bathing season with events on the seafront in late April
  • Carnival of Offida (25 km away · January–February): one of the most striking events in Le Marche

Summer · June–September

Summer is the busiest time of all. The concerts at the Sanpark Adriatic Live Arena draw national and international artists; the San.B Sound festival at Parco Nelson Mandela brings rappers, comedians and pop singers; the seafront becomes the stage of evening life, with live music, markets and food events. The beach clubs are at full tilt; every evening something is happening.

  • Sanpark Adriatic Live Arena · big concerts (stadium area, Viale dello Sport)
  • San.B Sound · a three-day festival in late June at Parco Nelson Mandela
  • Concerts and live music on the seafront almost every evening
  • Sporting events: regattas, swimming races, beach volleyball tournaments
  • Food fairs nearby: oliva all'ascolana, oily fish, Piceno wines
  • Exhibitions at the Palazzina Azzurra (the 2026 programme runs until 27 September)

Autumn · October–November

Autumn is the quiet season — fewer tourists, lower prices, and a town that returns to its own rhythm. The sea stays pleasantly warm until mid-October. Blue Flags still flying on most of the beaches. The light on the palms with the low sun is one of the most recognisable things about the Adriatic in this season.

  • The Sentina Nature Reserve at the height of the bird migration (birdwatching, trails)
  • Photography exhibitions at the Palazzina Azzurra (a programme that continues until September/October)
  • Oliva all'ascolana DOP fairs in the nearby towns
  • The harbour fish market runs as usual (the summer tours are over, but the market is there)

Winter · December–February

Winter is the least known season and — perhaps — the most surprising for those who love the sea out of season, deserted towns, historic places frequented only by locals. The temperature rarely drops below 5°C thanks to the coastal microclimate. It's also the time of the Carnival of Offida — one of the most striking events in Le Marche, just 25 km from the house.

  • Historic Carnival of Offida (January–February · 502 years of tradition, recognised at regional level)
  • Christmas markets in the historic centre of San Benedetto
  • New Year and Epiphany concerts on the seafront
  • Historic cafés (Florian, Soriano) frequented by locals · the town's true out-of-season atmosphere

Sport and cycling · all year round

San Benedetto del Tronto has for decades been one of the Italian capitals of amateur cycling. The network of hill roads around the town is a natural training ground; the passage of the Tirreno-Adriatico every March has made the area an international icon of professional cycling. Through the year there are regular gran fondo rides, cycling marathons and local races — often accompanied by road closures at weekends. For those travelling with a bike or wanting to hire one, it's a perfect area.

Exhibitions · Palazzina Azzurra (all year round)

The Palazzina Azzurra — a 1934 Rationalist building on the Riviera delle Palme — is San Benedetto's main exhibition centre. It hosts temporary exhibitions of contemporary art, photography, historical memory and pop culture. The 2026 programme runs until 27 September, with a different curator each month. Entry is often free; for culturally curious guests it's a fixed stop on any stay.

San Benedetto as a base for Le Marche

One thing that often isn't immediately clear: San Benedetto del Tronto is an ideal base from which to explore a whole region. From here you can reach Ascoli Piceno, Fermo and the Castelluccio Sibillini in 35-40 minutes; Urbino, Macerata and the Frasassi Caves in 2 hours. Le Marche is a small region, densely historic, underrated by tourists — and San Benedetto is the place from which to explore it without having to change accommodation every night.
