At La Tana you're welcome with dogs, cats, more than one — with no supplement. We've had groups with three dogs perfectly at ease. Below, everything you need to know to plan a stay with your dog in San Benedetto.
What to always carry on your walks
Before we talk about where to go, an important note on what to always have with you when you go out with your dog in town. National Italian law (the Ministry of Health Ordinance, most recently published in the Official Gazette no. 209 of 6 September 2024, periodically renewed) requires you, on every walk in a public area, to carry:
- a lead no longer than 1.5 metres in all urban areas, parks, the seafront, the lanes of the historic centre (fenced exercise areas such as the Parco Bau are the exception: there you can let the dog off);
- a muzzle to hand — rigid or soft and foldable — to put on the dog in the event of a risk to the safety of people or animals, or if the authorities ask;
- bags for picking up waste, always and everywhere.
In San Benedetto del Tronto, in addition to national law, there's a specific municipal ordinance (signed by Mayor Spazzafumo on 6 October 2023, published in the Municipal Official Bulletin) requiring the dog's owner to carry a container (a small bottle, spray or similar) with plain water — no detergents or chemicals — to use to rinse any surface wet by the dog urinating. The rule applies in all public and publicly used areas (paved streets, shopfronts, shop entrances, play equipment and street furniture). Exempt: guide dogs for the blind, people with disabilities who are unable, and police and Civil Protection dog units on duty. An administrative fine of €25 to €500.

Until recently, anyone travelling with a dog on the Adriatic had to go to Pesaro or Pescara to find a pet-friendly stretch of sand. Since August 2024 San Benedetto has its own: the Spiaggia per cani (Pineta dei Funai), in the pinewood of the same name behind the north pier, on the border with Grottammare. Dogs can go in the water and run about. Free access, no charge. Rules at the entrance (lead while passing through, picking up waste, vaccinations) — nothing surprising.

OpenParco Bau · fenced exercise area
It's in the north of the town, in the area of the eastern seafront — 600 metres from the house, about seven minutes on foot. A double-gated fenced dog area (useful for dogs that escape single enclosures), a separate sandy area, agility obstacles. Busiest in the morning from 8 to 10 and in the evening after 6 — when locals bring their dogs before work or after.
Dog-friendly beach clubs · on the sand
Several seafront concessions accept dogs in season, some with a water bowl at the entrance. It's worth calling ahead to check the current season — policies change from year to year. If your favourite club doesn't accept them, there's always the official dog beach as a plan B.
Two trusted vets
For routine visits (vaccinations, check-ups, minor treatments) the nearest clinic to the house is the Clinica Veterinaria Gallo, run by Dr Giuseppe Gallo — Corso Mazzini 247, telephone +39 0735 500776. Opening hours: Mon-Fri 09:00-12:30 and 16:00-19:30, Saturday 09:30-12:30, closed Sunday.
For any out-of-hours emergency — night, weekend, public holiday — the place to go is the Clinica Veterinaria Marche Sud, Drs Grosso, Fausti and Cantatore. Open 24 hours a day, at Via Ischia I, 28 in Grottammare — 10 minutes by car from the house. Telephone +39 0735 81661.
These are both clinics we turn to ourselves for our own animals. Save the two numbers in your phone before you arrive.
The garden at La Tana — with a dog
The garden of the house is fenced. But: three free-roaming rabbits live in it. Most dogs get on well with them, but if your dog hunts or fixates on small animals, weigh it up. Keep your dog in view for the first few minutes to see how it reacts.
Fresh water in the neighbourhood
Along the cycle path and in the gardens there are drinking fountains — handy after a run or a swim in the sea. It isn't recycled seawater.
